The months after the premature birth of her child left Erika Brandstatter feeling somewhat overwhelmed. She found help at the Parenting Place. “I felt really supported by the Parenting Place during my son’s first year, and you can’t really pay that back,” said Brandstatter, a volunteer with the program for 21/2 years.

Bright Beginnings is one of 14 such programs across the state. Each program is sponsored by a different nonprofit.

The Parenting Place, A Family Resource Center, is Bright Beginnings’ host agency. Its mission is to relieve isolation, reduce the stress of parenting and prevent child abuse and neglect by providing outreach and a place where families can receive support and education and develop a sense of community. Brandstatter provides home visits to new parents in Longmont, bringing resource information packets and a willing ear.

“She brings warmth, kindness, understanding, quality developmental games and materials, referrals, a listening ear, a bit of her own mom wisdom, as well as an educational, personal and career background that gives her serious credibility with families,” said Kathie Duschene, director of Bright Beginnings. “Most of all, she has provided a connection to community that is so needed by all new parents.”

Averaging one visit a month, Brandstatter asks a lot of questions and keeps the conversation focused on the new parents. Although much of the concern regards the health, welfare and development of the child, the new parents are the ones who ultimately support their child’s development.

“I can speak from my experience rather than give advice,” Brandstatter said. “When most moms need help, they ask for it, no matter what situation they’re in.”

“Erika Brandstatter has the volunteer spirit in her blood,” Duschene said. “She is always thinking outside of the box with the families she visits. She does not assume anything and waits for families to share with her if they desire. Her non-judgmental attitude is a sought-after trait that managers hope for in their search for quality volunteers.”
