Sue Freas
with Heartland Hospice

by Peter Dettmann

For the past year, Sue Freas has committed nearly three hours a week at the Heartland Hospice volunteering a generous and caring heart to those nearing the end of their lives.

Freas works with as many as five hospice clients and their families, listening to how they feel and providing support during their transition. "I am a companion to them," said Freas, "We read the paper or books, answer questions or go outside to look at nature or just be quiet."

As a registered nurse for 32 years, volunteering at Heartland Hospice was an easy transition for Freas. After years of caring for others, as well as a 20 hour hospice volunteer training program, Freas has come away with newly discovered skills through volunteering. "I learned the skills of talking and listening to people as they are doing a life review," said Freas, "much of what I do is just listening."

Freas enjoys hearing about where her clients lived growing up and what they did as children while they reflect on their lives. Yet still Freas values the many new friends she has made the most."I enjoy the friendship of patients and the many others I've met along the way," said Freas.

In the delicate environment of Heartland Hospice, Freas knows patient comfort and wellbeing is a priority. She admits she tries to be as cordial as possible to everyone she meets.

In addition to volunteering with hospice residents, Freas also volunteers in the office, during special projects such as the Holiday Season of Giving program and at a Broomfield nursing home.
