Herb Harris
with the Volunteer Connection

by Morgan Lipton

"I feel very positive about my volunteer work for the Volunteer Connection."

Herb Harris has been volunteering as a Website Content Volunteer for the Volunteer Connection for about a year now. Early in 2003 he read an advertisement in the Daily Camera for a computer-related volunteer position and, as a former employee of a computer company, he felt that it was right up his alley.

The Volunteer Connection is entering its 35th year of operation serving Boulder County, with a goal of actively promoting volunteerism, connecting volunteers with opportunities, and helping organizations effectively engage volunteers to meet our community's needs. The Volunteer Connection's website, www.volunteerconnection.net, is a vital part of making the connection between local organizations and people who are looking to volunteer their time.

As a Website Content Volunteer, Herb formats information on events and volunteer organizations for the Volunteer Connection's website. Herb uses brochures and other literature sent to the Volunteer Connection to write profiles of the organization's events and purposes, which will then be uploaded to the website by the Webmaster.

This information is especially helpful for people who are looking to volunteer but do not know what organization would fit their personal interests or goals.
Herb feels that his work for the Volunteer Connection has been a very positive endeavor for him.

"It is a positive thing to do," says Harris, "and a way to help give back to the community."

In addition to feeling that his volunteering efforts benefit the community, Herb also adds that his position as a Website Content Volunteer has helped him pick up new computer skills along the way. Herb does all of his content writing on his computer at home and averages between four and six hours per week.

For Herb, volunteering for local nonprofit agencies is not a new experience. For many years Herb volunteered for a man who is blind by reading his mail to him and helping him write checks to pay his bills. In addition, Herb served as a volunteer for Community Food Share for many years and volunteered as a tutor in schools as well.

"It helps keep me vital," says Herb as to why volunteering is worthwhile to him.
The Volunteer Connection is very thankful for Herb's time and effort in helping educate the Boulder County community about agencies and organizations in which the public can get involved!
