Rhonda Hovendick views this part of her life as a time
to use her skills for the good of non-profit ventures. "For me, being on
the Board of Voices for Children CASA is really an extension of the work I once
did," she says.
CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate Association)
is a national non-profit. The Boulder County organization named itself Voices
for Children CASA. The beneficiaries are children who are wards of the Court due
to neglect or abuse.
Hovendick knew it was a good fit when she joined
CASA's Board of Directors. She heads (with Board member Geri Schrader) the committee
in charge of the two major fundraisers, a spring breakfast (April 8th) and a fall
luncheon. The Board also raises awareness by hosting a booth at local events such
as the Lafayette Peach Festival.
Hovendick acknowledges she's benefited
from this job by gaining an understanding of the scope, accountability and other
attributes of non-profits. "There is great joy in the work we are doing.
We celebrate each time a CASA child finds a safe and permanent home."
When queried about the significance of volunteering, she affirms, "Those
who can, should engage. Everyone is the beneficiary of some significant other,
and is, in turn, capable of making the world a better place."
