Loma Linda Staff
with the Holiday Basket Program

by Cindy Zimmermann

For the past two Christmas seasons, the staff at Loma Linda Elementary has left its holiday finery in the closet.

Instead of attending an employee Christmas party, staff members have donned work clothes and joined the volunteers at the Holiday Basket Program at the Boulder County Fairgrounds.

The Rev. Jan Dewlen, Holiday Basket Program co-coordinator, said, "We gave away 3,100 children's gifts in 2001. We're expecting 6,000 people to register this year."

"After two years, it may become a tradition," said Lorna Linda Principal Deana Sonnesyn. "Our staff and students have always collected canned food at Christmas time. Our staff enjoys doing things for people. As part of the spirit of the season, we wanted to be together and give back to the community. It's fun to get to know the staff and their families outside of school. We had a good time. We laughed a lot."

The 30-member Loma Linda team consisted of staff, spouses and family members. They spent one morning organizing food boxes and toys.

Their shift happened to coincide with the bicycle giveaway portion of the program. The group enjoyed watching the children receive their bicycles and ride away. It brought tears to some of the staff's eyes.

"We watched the children's faces light up," said Diane Roggow, Loma Linda's retired literacy coach. "The kids had wonderful grins as they rode around on the bicycles."

Roggow read about the need for volunteers in the Daily Times-Call. She suggested volunteering to the school's staff. The response was enthusiastic.

"Volunteering is a nice alternative to a Christmas party at a restaurant or at someone's home," Roggow said.

"It is not only giving back, it's developing a sense of community."

Adults are needed to help register families in November and organize food in December. Children may help by making ornaments or cards. Angel trees with toy requests will be located in the Twin Peaks Mall and at other retail locations. Used bicycles are also needed.
