with Boulder County Cares

Reverend Sandy Stewart is more than an ordained Deacon in the Methodist church, she's also a savior to many of Longmont's homeless population. At night Stewart and her husband, Rick, cruise the streets and alleys of Longmont looking for homeless people to assist.

They work for a program started October 2006, called Boulder County Cares which provides food, support services, safe shelter and means to become self sufficient for homeless adults in Boulder County. The Boulder County Cares Organization needs volunteers and sleeping bags for its upcoming season starting October through April 30th.

BCC helps homeless people find day labor jobs and also assists them in a Transitional Program where they work and stay at the shelter with 80% of their pay kept for their future housing and care.

Stewart said, "They are excited they are going to have a place to live. It is hard to live on the streets. It's hard to keep hold of important things. None of the clients I have want to be homeless. There is always more to the story."

Amy Glenney of Boulder County Cares said, "As a street volunteer, she directly provides life saving services to men and women living on the streets - preventing deaths due to hypothermia. Sandy sees the daily struggles as our clients fight to survive. Her compassion leads her to extend the work she was doing onto the street where her efforts are changing lives every day."
