Becky Williamson has worked at the Longmont library since
1969 and still volunteers regularly as a substitute librarian. A third generation
Coloradoan born in Greeley, she has traveled all over the world. After successfully
raising 5 children, she now has thirteen grandchildren. The knitting and crocheting group that Williamson has lead since 1999, is an arm of the Senior Center. Weekly, 30 - 40 talented women knit or crochet fuzzy, fancy and brightly colored yarn into beautiful hats, mittens and scarves. Williamson said, "If you're looking for our group, just listen for the laughter and you'll find us! " 535 of the 1,332 items they produced last year were given to St. Vrain Community Council's Holiday Basket Program. Some were donated to Longmont United Hospital's Bereavement Project, Life Choice, St. Vrain Parenting, Boulder County Nurses Project, Safe House, the homeless shelter and other small groups. They have knitted 82 sweaters for the Headstart Program and make lap robes for the Veteran's Nursing Home in Cheyenne. Williamson said that they are a very giving group who really care about each other and all come from varied backgrounds. This year will be Williamson's 25th year running and completing the Bolder Boulder foot race. She has run almost every race in Colorado including Longmont's Turkey Trot and the Stampede River Run. She walks every day, hikes, and lifts weights. Williamson started donating mittens for a project of good will she and her daughter are collaborating on. Williamson sews a 'Grandma's Mittens' label on the mittens and her daughter, who teaches in the San Luis Valley, distributes them to needy school children. Kathryn Pipis, unofficial director of a group called Close-Knit from the St. Stevens Church helps Williamson deliver some of the hand-knitted items for the Holiday Basket Program. Pipis said, "I think Becky is a remarkable woman and she is very involved with other organizations. She does so many wonderful things. Especially last year with the snow, when the kids didn't have hats or gloves. Besides needing them, people really enjoy them."
