Since retiring, Nancy Markham has stayed busy with numerous
volunteer efforts. She's on the advisory board at CU's Natural History museum,
has put in countless hours at her church, and belongs to an organization that
helps women in education. However, there is one organization that has helped put
a little extra light into Markham's life. The I Have
a Dream Foundation strives to help at risk youth from low-income areas achieve
their education and career goals by providing personal and academic support through
tutoring and mentoring. It is through this foundation that Markham met 11 year
old Diana. Outside of tutor time, Markham and Diana do other activities such as going to lunch, playing games and going to movies. "In the summer we like to have her come down to the lake where she can bring a friend and we can picnic," Markham said. On Saturday she took Diana to see Charlotte's Web, which they followed by doing Diana's weekly reader homework. "She really cares about school and deserves a big pat on the back," she said. "Our goals are to help her learn to focus regardless of what's going on around her and to help her gain self confidence." "One of the things that has been nicest is that Diana's family has included us in their holiday and cultural experiences," Markham said. "It's been wonderful to learn more about her culture." Markham believes it is so important to volunteer your time, talent, money, or whatever it is you have to offer. "In order to have a civilized society, we need to walk in the shoes of other people and do what we can to understand their culture and where their coming from," Markham said. "In doing so it just enriches your life so tremendously." "I've grown to love Diana and it's been a good exercise for my brain as well as my heart."
