For five years, Sonya Baker, 18, has prepared for her future by volunteering for the Longmont Humane Society.
"I get to gain experience and I feel my efforts are rewarded," she said. "It feels great when I get to help care for sick animals and see them adopted into a new home." Baker, who was accepted to Colorado State University's veterinary program, volunteers in the shelter's veterinary clinic.
She spends three to four hours a week cleaning the clinic and observing surgeries. Baker has gained valuable experience by interacting with veterinarians who have provided her with practical experience and a strong foundation to help her succeed in her future endeavors.
"I love being there," she said. "It's like a second home to me and by volunteering, I've realized that you get so much back in return."
Additionally, Baker
volunteers one hour a week at the Colorado Therapeutic Riding Center. "Volunteering
helps me forget about a hard day at school," she said. "It's therapy
for me because it reminds me I'm there for them."
