A determined and conscientious volunteer working with minority students through P.E.R.L., Lupita Chavez has observed many things over the years. For example, there is a lower college enrollment rate among Latino students. In Chavez's mind, there appears to be a lack of understanding about the many options for continuing their education. "It occurred to me, what a great idea it would be, if someone could help guide these students on how to get to college," she notes.
A CU Boulder freshman, Chavez is always looking for ways to give back to her community. She found the perfect opportunity to address this issue after attending the P.E.R.L (The People Engaged in Raising Leaders) training "focused on helping people of color become more involved civically in their community."
Chavez
collaborated with friends from P.E.R.L to create The Sharing Achievement for Student
Success and Education (SASSE) program designed to encourage Latino students. Together,
they organized the "Catching Your Future- College and Resource Fair"
which focused on recruiting students not traditionally bound for college.
