Mary Eaman speaks some Spanish, but it's actually her English skills that have positively impacted the immigrant community in Longmont for six years. Eaman teaches two, two-hour English classes each week through Intercambio de Comunidades, a Boulder-based nonprofit founded in 2001 that works to build respectful communities and broaden opportunities for immigrants through language education, cultural exchange, and friendship.
Eaman first learned about teaching English through Intercambio from her husband, who heard the organization's founder, Lee Shanis, speak at a Rotary Club meeting. Today, Eaman is more than an English instructor; she is also a friend and adopted family member of the seven women she teaches. "I know their extended families and have gone to their quinceaneras and baby showers," she says.
A physical therapist by profession, Eaman says
teaching through Intercambio has taught her about the difficulty of learning a
new language while managing a family and job. "My volunteer work has helped
me better understand and appreciate the immigrants in this community and become
a part of their community," she said.
