Service to others has become a way of life for Bobby Kysela. Kysela tutored for the "I Have a Dream" Foundation for one and a half years while he was a graduate student at the University of Colorado.
"What I admire about him is that he wants to have a life of service," said Cathie Williamson, Program Director for the "I Have a Dream" Foundation. "Wherever he is, he finds ways to serve in a meaningful way."
The "I Have a Dream" Foundation empowers low-income children (Dreamers) to achieve higher education by providing them with guaranteed tuition support and equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and habits they need to gain entry to higher education and succeed in college and beyond.
Kysela tutored students in complex biology, chemistry, physics, and math concepts. "He would get excited when he saw the light go on (for his students)," said Williamson. He also helped a student with GED preparation.
Kysela explained that he was able to make cosines and tangents fun for kids because he had learned from teachers along the way who inspired him with their animated instructional style. He shared that enthusiasm for learning with his Dreamers.
Kysela also volunteered in high school, while attending the United States Naval Academy, and while attending the University of Denver. Kysela's service to others continues. He is now working as an AmeriCorps Dental Access Coordinator and is seeking a career in medicine.
Kysela, who
credits his dedication to service to his girlfriend, Katie Petrie, encouraged
those interested in service work to seek volunteer situations where they feel
comfortable. "Find one that fits well and commit to it and keep an open mind,"
said Kysela.
