Sarah LaBarre has been a volunteer for Real Choices Pregnancy Care Center for about a year and half. She is a mentor and facilitates two support groups through the organization: the MOMS group, which involves women with children and the Expectations group, which involves expectant mothers.
Real Choices Pregnancy Care Center offers support to men and women on the Front Range before, during and after unexpected pregnancies. The support can be emotional, financial, and as an information center; providing understanding of adoption options and other services available.
Sarah was nominated by Real Choices because of her commitment and enthusiasm. She believes her passion for this work stems from her love for people and extending herself to those who have not had the stability and support that she has now and growing up. "Realizing that not everyone has that, I just try to be that for other people."
It was in New York, volunteering with an art-therapy centered organization, that Sarah first led support groups and mentored single parents and expectant moms. After moving to Colorado, a friend told her about Real Choices. Initially a mentor the first few months, the organization approached her to start up a MOMS group and an Expectations group. For the past year she has acted as a facilitator for both groups, which meet weekly and bi-weekly. She says that her favorite part of working with women at Real Choices is getting close to them. "It usually ends up happening that the girls you get to know so well and you spend so much time with really just become your friends…That's kind of the best part, when lives intersect more than just an hour a week."
