Burton Lee
with Boulder County CROP Walk
by Jennifer Rodehaver

Behind every successful nonprofit organization stand the often unsung heroes - those individuals who clock countless hours doing the mundane tasks necessary to keep operations running smoothly. Burton Lee, longtime treasurer of the Boulder County CROP Walk, is such a person. In previous years he has coordinated the walk, evaluated the route (which changes every year to allow participants to experience unique sections of the region), as well as contributing behind the scenes for several additional charitable groups. Clearly, Lee is not seeking fame or glamour as he labors to get the job done.

"Volunteering is part of creating a good balance in one's life, and balance is an essential element of a quality existence."

CROP Walk is an annual event nationwide designed to celebrate the abundance of food harvested while acknowledging the hardship of chronic hunger. Funds raised during the 10K and 2K walk are split among several relief organizations with a significant portion staying in the local community.

The 2009 CROP Walk takes place on Sunday, October 18. Community Food Shares will be the beneficiary in Boulder County.

Lee considers the event "a feel good experience" and one in which entire families can participate. He notes that there aren't many opportunities for kids to work on hunger issues. This event offers something fun for all ages and abilities. Lee is especially proud of the educational component of the day. Information about hunger issues are communicated throughout the route, reaching around 400 walkers.

Suzanne Dysard, spokesperson for CROP WALK, notes "Burton truly cares about the hungry people here and around the world. He has given many hours of his time to help." She adds that he is always ready to pitch in.

Mr. Lee claims he meets the most interesting people through his various connections in the arena of fundraising and grass roots community involvement. He believes the CROP Walk represents an opportunity to contribute more than just money, allowing anyone to be a benefactor of a worthy cause.
