Without real role models, children are often left alone in an undesired situation. Sandy Myers, a Senior Partner at Partners Mentoring Youth, is one of many volunteers who strive to improve the lives of these youth. Myers has been a Senior Partner for six months, and the time and effort spent by her and other volunteers has made no small impact on the young people in the program.
Partners Mentoring Youth provides a personal one-on-one mentor for its youth. An adult Senior Partner works regularly with a child Junior Partner on different aspects of Partners Mentoring Youth's mentorship program from life skills workshops to schoolwork tutoring.
Over a period of a year, each pair develops a close relationship. There is a large emphasis on communication skills and responsibility for the child. For Myers, the position is not without fun and satisfaction. "This is something that I've wanted to do for a long time," said Myers, "and now that I have made the commitment I am thrilled that I finally took the plunge."
