Darcy Olivas with
Adams County Connectionsby
Peter Dettmann
Darcy Olivas, a 19-year-old nursing assistant, nanny of twins,
and full-time college student, shares her minimal free time as a mentor through
the Adams County Connections Peer Assistance Services. Dusty Teng, mentoring program
coordinator for Adams County Connections, is grateful for the involvement Olivas
has with the program.
"She always goes above and
beyond…She is always looking for more volunteers. She refers her own friends
to volunteer," Teng said.
The goal of Adams County
Connections is to provide mentors for "at-risk" youths in the Adams
County School District. The mentors provide an opportunity to connect young people
with the outside world and explore community events, while also developing social
bonding skills.
When asked what the most rewarding part
of her relationship was, Olivas replied modestly, "The feeling that I made
a difference in her life."
