After retiring from a 30-year career as a Computer Programmer for IBM, Karen Utley started volunteering for Flatiron's Habitat for Humanity. Utley went to the Flatiron's Habitat for Humanity's second meeting and became the first President of the Board. Because of term limits, she then became the Board's Secretary for 8 years.
Flatiron's Habitat for Humanity offers no interest loans combined with "sweat equity". A prospective buyer donates their own labor in the construction of their future home. Utley explained, "They are involved in all phases. It gives them the skills and knowledge of construction and gives them a connection to their home. They know about walking the rails."
As Selection Chair Utley found, "They had more families then homes. The choices were very difficult emotionally. Getting to know volunteers and meeting with families is the fun aspect!"
Flatiron's Habitat for Humanity's Executive Director, Paul Casey, complimented Utley's dedication and efforts, "Karen represents the best in volunteerism. She devoted many hours during both its startup and formative years. Karen's unflagging commitment has been outstanding!" A few years ago, Utley retired, but was asked by Casey to come back temporarily.
Utley also served as the Family Selection Chair, Church Relations Chair, Closing Administrator and Mortgage Administrator, managing sales. She is now compiling a How-To book on the guidelines of mortgage closings.
