The beauty of Colorado is no secret to its people, but not everyone knows how to enjoy Colorado's nature and wildlife safely, carefully, and lawfully. The Indian Peaks Wilderness Alliance provides public education about Colorado's wilderness areas. Anne Vickery, the chair of the Alliance, founded the Alliance in 1982. Since then, the organization has worked with the National Park Service to preserve the area and provide visitors with information.
Located several miles east of the municipality of Ward, Indian Peaks Wilderness is a beautiful area managed by the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forest. Visitors can enjoy many trails, waterfalls, and lakes. Vickery, along with other volunteers, routinely hikes up to the area backcountry to provide public education about the habitat and its regulations.
"It's really just enjoyable," said Vickery about
her volunteer efforts. For over twenty years, Vickery has overseen the growth
of the Alliance. When asked for the reason why she tirelessly works, Vickery said:
"I care about nature."
