Marilyn Villalobos has accomplished an amazing transformation. Upon arriving in the U.S. five years ago, no one in her family spoke English. She moved from school to school, and her life revolved around attending classes and going home. She said, "Those times were hard for me. I didn't have any information on getting ahead."
Changes in Marilyn's life began three years ago when she participated in the Boulder County Healthy Youth Alliance's Sharing Achievement for Student Success program, a pilot program for motivated student leaders. She then attended the People Engaged in Raising Leaders training program and ultimately helped organize the Catch Your Future College and Resource Fair. The students advertised the fair and arranged for teachers to present information on topics related to getting into college such as writing college entrance essays, getting financial aid, and scholarships.
Last summer, when Marilyn attended a Colorado Municipal League conference, she met Governor Bill Ritter, and commented, "They take our efforts seriously."
Today, Marilyn is one of three students
on the Longmont Youth Council and co-chair of the Planning Program. However, she
said, " I don't think we need a title. Everyone works. It's really nice."
