Restore Fire Scars at Heil Valley Ranch
On I Volunteer! Day 2007,
volunteers helped thin forests and build slash piles at Heil Valley
Ranch, an open space area just 10 minutes from Longmont and Boulder.
Their work was part of a larger forest restoration operation that
improved wildlife habitat, decreased fire danger to neighboring
homes, and enhanced meadow ecosystems. These slash piles were
consumed last winter during a controlled burn, and now we need
to restore the ensuing scars with native grasses. Revegetation
is a vital component of this project, as it will increase habitat
quality, prevent soil erosion, and keep invasive weeds from proliferating.
Using rakes, shovels, buckets and blankets, volunteers will clear
non-native plants, then spread and rake native seed into disturbed
areas. We will also spread wood chips to help control erosion
and prevent the establishment of more noxious weeds. Heil Valley
Ranch is a fascinating open space area and if lucky volunteers
might see elk, deer, or even wild turkeys.
